Etching

This concept for the screen printed background (2)  is what mainly informed my choice of object for the etching. I was considering the explosion of people, ideas and concepts and I wanted to bring the idea back to the roots of life. Survival, therefore I began to look into agricultural tools and objects; once used to sustain life. The scythe is an object used historically in farming. Although the object also holds other references such as Marxist 'commune' style farming and collectivism, I am mainly referencing agricultural means. The historical aspect of this object is offset by imagery from mass farmed lands today such as certain indonesian provinces completely burnt out from deforestation.  I began looking into this imagery and concept, many diagrams came up of the tool; these aesthetically are interesting so i decided to use them.

Therefore, I decided to produce some visual investigations of the object to try and clarify how I want to use it as an etching.
The small etched image will be presented in a glass vessel in the library;  this could metaphorically convey how the answer to our environmental blindness is locked in something as simple as how we produce and consume our food. The information is available to us; within a library for example, yet we are not putting the information to use. The interlocking layers of this display also play well within this concept.

Process-

Preparation of acetate

Exposure onto copper plate (to produce image)

Vinegar, Chemical and chalk paste (cleans grease of surface)

Aquatint (fine sand burnt onto surface of copper to produce more tonal image)

Final stage; printing the image
-ink onto plate with cardboard
-prep paper by placing in water
-work into with material gaze to ensure etching has taken the ink
-gently (with soft surface of hand) start removing excess ink with tissue
-take paper out of water bath and drain
- roll plate and paper together under pressure roller
-leave to dry
-repeat
-clean space
