Workshop and research- Paint (abstraction)
Abstraction
The quality of dealing with ideas rather than events.
Death of painting in the 1960's, early 70's; shift to conceptual, performance and site specific art (paining seen to be anachronistic, associated with traditional values and ownership). Renewed in the 80's to abstract neo-geo, slightly venturing into abstract painting again by replicating styles of the past. 1990's brought abstraction and performance work with conceptual roots. The early 20th century was modernist.
Possible paths to abstraction
Cropping, reduction of images/objects to abstract them from current context.
Possibility of looking at what a painting is and what it is not to explore its influence.
Rhythm and optically within a work to increase psychological interaction.
Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko (/ˈrɒθkoʊ/), born Markus Yakovlevich Rotkovich (Russian: Ма́ркус Я́ковлевич Ротко́вич, Latvian: Markuss Rotkovičs; September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was an American painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist. With Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, he is one of the most famous postwar American artists.

Abstraction is easily expressed through the act of paining. Although not the sole media or available expression. Within the workshop, I discovered this, through the preliminary experimental works I used the given shapes to abstract different visual uses. One of which was the circle, used in the braille style writing in two of the pieces.'Abstract' upon the black and white work and 'The shapes of nature' upon the second. This therefore, uses the shape as a form of communication, however the lack of 3D nature means that the communication doesn't take place. This emphasis on communication was important to me due to the fact works that are deemed 'abstract' often seem to convey so much. The concepts within my work, essays and poetry are often very 'abstract' however, in reality they are a combination of all the western consumer is lead to become. Therefore, although abstract works may not convey to many, the current process of living and treatment of the planet is abstract to me. The overall notion that individuals both view the same ideas and works as abstract seems ludicrous to me due to connection to words, ideas and paintings more than to many fellow humans.
