Materiality
Materialism
Research lecture

A specific focus on the already present within the world. Items or objects that can be manipulated instead of creating further. Interest can be found within understanding the world as it stands without creating new aspects.
“As individuals express their life, so they are. What they are, therefore, coincides with their production, both with what they produce and with how they produce. The nature of individuals thus depends on the material conditions determining their production.”
Karl Marx, The German Ideology, 1845

Therefore, further thought is provoked regarding production of goods and the reasoning behind such. This is of specific interest to me due to my observation of ethical production and the domino effect of industry from western consumerism. This can be seen in the rise of pop art and the utilization of capitalist culture and celebrity. The interest in this is the latent content behind the work. Artists such as Andy Warhol playing a system of mass consumerism/production.

Further to this, the seminar sparked thoughts concerning the lack of objects/content becoming the main aspect of the work. As seen in Rauschenberg's 'Erased de Kooning'. This began to inspire thoughts regarding the luxury of items that we consider everyday and that this may be deemed egotistic within our privileged western world. The luxury of certain materials and the irony of calling them 'mundane' or 'found' when in many situations and cultures, these objects are great luxury. To render them useless in art therefore, could be deemed wasteful.
