Reflection- Post consumerism

Reflection
Post consumerism celebrations

The modern Christmas seems so plagued with greed. I found my heart aching for living in the world I do and watching the open continuation of so called 'economic growth'. My flame for my own art dampened over Christmas as my research gathered speed and depth in so many areas.
So many books and links forming that creativity was put on hold elsewhere. The need for a creative thought to spark modern change is unquestionable however the scene for such in a modern art world may be small at present. Art for the soul is an amazing medicine however when such a problem is gathering pace every day I worry my own artistic need has become a self indulgence. My small notebook filled with sketches and words reflects this. That to myself is the art of my mind at present. The planning of work with a fellow artist this evening has helped me to look forward and apply my research. She also studies fine art at NUA and social issues are also close to her heart however also a shared desire to act for the better.
My metaphorical approach is useful for the wider desire to change mindsets and the essays I'm working on will be paired with pieces to reach the upper strand of 'gallery goers'. However the need for something more short term is within me and hopefully this project will go toward feeding that. The ideas and project is still a work in progress with draft ideas for a sculpture being discussed. The sculpture is likely to be interactive to positively influence the individual. Ideally, to educate them simultaneously about the issues that the work is regarding.
The piece would be focused on gathering materials and funds for homeless individuals. Within our culture, many seem to instantly blame the individual on the street, presuming it was their own fault. regardless of that, suffering should not be encouraged, especially in a so called 'developed' country'. Our true development is reflected in how we treat those who can give nothing back and those who are vulnerable. Initial ideas suggested remaking the material collected into blankets or socks/scarves. Also, to develop this further, we could use plastic bags to line the base of the blankets to make them more durable.
The ideas still need developing further however, although my own concept is broader, in the meantime I aim to creatively help as many people as possible.
