The Holistic presentation space

The delicate chapels, basilicas and historical grounds boasted the most impressive ceiling decoration and painting. This is something rarely seen today and this strikes me as a shame. the wasted space above us. The metaphorical implication of work being above us, the higher stance that holds. Placement of work within a space offers differing moods and thoughts, looking up toward art, psychologically is likely to hold higher stance than that on a white wall.

These Photographs were taken as I visited various religious and historical sites around Rome, Florence and Venice. I was struck by the ancient use of floor to ceiling decoration and elaborate ground patterns. The use of space was more effective to the overall experience. Not only were the tiles/flooring decorative and intricate, they added grandeur to the setting. This would be effective within a gallery setting. merging of the floors, walls and ceiling would also be interesting to investigate. The holistic result would allow a mood to be draped over and surround the viewer.
