Above and Below

Poetry

While in Italy I observed many historical and social settings. Including the Vatican, coliseum and various religious buildings. Many of which had very decorative ceilings and flooring, often made from expensive and rare materials. The presence of such made the experience of each building holistic and overwhelming. This, accompanied with the historical context of the places lead to the mood of each building to become inspiring. I began to consider each surface, walls ceilings and floors as a place of presentation and decoration. Therefore, the title 'Above and below' emerged. Surrounded by history I considered my essay for this unit and my research into historical relevance. The need to move forward away from repetition of history and to ensure progression. Every surface within the space was effectively used to produce a feeling within the viewer present. In religious settings this was to show the grandeur of the 'higher' figures however this could equally be used in a gallery setting to encapsulate the viewer. This poetry was inspired by this notion.
