The Norwich Radical organised this event to bring together arts, politics and progression to ensure the future for the media can empower and improve instead of hold bias and misinform.

Notes and reflections
-New internationalist- publication https://newint.org/
Focusing upon the funding 'buy into a better story' and the assure that reports come from those in the situation instead of outsiders who are in no way connected to the problem.
'New Internationalist is a multi-award winning, independent, non-profit media co-operative. For over 40 years, we’ve specialized in investigative reporting, publishing our magazine and books on human rights, politics, social and environmental justice.' (website extract)
Although more focused upon publication, news and media, the speaker from this organisation was very interesting due to the issue of funding and also representation. My work holds close ties to socially engaged, political and activist themes, therefore, listening to talks from such an individual publication was useful. The publication focus's on vital news and does not bow down to corporate funding or private individual ownership. The hard hitting, real stories that are publish provide excellent background and support for my own work. Interaction with the articles is a much better way of understanding as it has come from the roots and not a bias report from an outside force.
The stories that were being shared and the issues raised were when the individuals were directly effected. For example, a community did not mobilize against disease before it hit them. this reminded me of the selfish nature spread today that unless it is your problem, then it is not a problem or not one of substantial size. This is a mindset that needs to alter, the notion that although not your immediate problem, it may be one day and the fact you would want help and change if you were at the receiving end of the disasters.

Talk of the publication release made me consider collective action and online publication of art and arts writing. Bold ideas within the releases would gain attention and grow the backing. Overhead funding to be avoided at all costs, self/viewer funding would be vital to replace power for the people and allow control. This also encourages a more collective mindset

-Solution 21 was mentioned vastly throughout the conference- Corporate capitalist 'solutions' for climate devastation was the main feature within the conference which is ironic considering the line up featured speakers such as Naomi Klein who are vastly against corporate 'solution' to the problems they have caused. Many activists were there to speak the truth of the summit and shame the large companies on the ground for their hidden actions killing our resources and natural world. However, these activists were forced to leave the summit with no valid reason, proving the over arching power within the situation.

Speaking out

Poetry and Politics
-Jake Reynolds https://thenorwichradical.com/?s=jake+reynolds+
'Something about poetry can inspire minor acts of social change'
Jake spoke of the poets place being a supporting role within society, the emotive influence that can change your day. He explained such with a metaphor regarding an old friend, neither of you planned the meeting however the emotion that is sparked through such is a feeling that lasts all day and alters your mood. The connection was unexpected and boosts the mind to a heightened sense of time and place. Within the modern world, much is planned and predictable however feelings such as this are not. This is like a connection with poetry, the connection is a refreshing breath that can show hope and truth to those blind to the usual means. While he spoke of such I was reminded of my own artwork, the art that is aesthetically pleasing. This work is made to connect psychologically first and then progressively.

Comparison with 'Refugee blues' https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/refugee-blues/
History relevance and modern contextualization of the irony and lack of change within the modern world. Reflections upon the theme were something the poet focused upon. Poetry having a power to document and spark emotion. The arts have done so throughout history however time is more desperate now and documentation is not enough.

'Most people ignore poetry because most poetry ignores people'

The talk progressed through various themes and one of which was 'making something of oneself'. In the modern world, the condition of desiring, money or possessions and that means you have made something of your life. Poetry and the arts as an ever reduced respect. This lead to the focus shifting to migration and work, the real drive for them to be 'of use' to our own society. The fact they are not appreciated as people but only economical possession.
Poetry aims to erode the boundaries between the personal and the political. The emotive link with poetry can resonate further due to its often very meaningful themes. This would be progressive with the art I produce, hence the reasoning for experimenting with poetry.
Further to these points and reflections, the choice of language was point of interest greatly. Many often accept the language they are raised with, the words they often use. However, this seems a shame due to the vast spectrum of language that can be utilized. Not only the learning of new languages but the re wording and re naming of things is a progressive societal trait. A new radical intimacy with the words growing when you re work them, or merge them into something emotive.

The discussion of such reminded me of the importance of self-evaluation and the nature of where language stemmed from. The natural poetic connection could come from the more natural use of the linguistics and a type of nostalgic reminder of the beauty of language. Works produced are paired with essay work, a poem could be the connecting factor between the hard reaching words and the aesthetic painting.
Another aspect that made me think deeply was the 'pressure value' theory. The idea that extra pressure doesn't need to be placed on people in the modern world, they are more likely to react to positivist outlook. Therefore the use of poetry uses positive emotions to enter such an emotional contract with the reader.

Another very interesting point raised was the fact latent talent/minds are often unaccented due to situational factors. These factors should be actively reduced to ensure that all bases are covered in the media and the arts, this would offer a fairer overview of the societal situation currently instead of a very small artist spectrum.

Within the talks, I cam to conclude the following; The moral pollution  we are facing means that air, water and land pollution can not be addressed. Therefore, psychological understanding is vital to transfer this into physical understanding and action.

'Life will always be more complicated than the statements we make out it'

Art in a Time of Crisis

- Arts emergency- http://www.arts-emergency.org/

Vital grassroots work with those unable to access the same things as others. To fairly shape the arts world that is heading in a more elitist direction. Allowing encouragement of creative subjects due to the lack of encouragement within schools already.

The gross historical inequality of the arts underlying the creative world. The lacking of understanding of background and subject yet still feeling we have the right to appropriate people and ideas.  'Theory of moral sentiment'
