Exhibition- Politics

Exhibition
Politics
Reflections and documentation

For the end of unit exhibition I chose to place my work in the title 'Politics' this is due to the close ties with my work conceptually. Within a group of four we curated, planned and executed the exhibition. Each individual took a role within the group, producing posters or name labels.
I produced a poem for the exhibition. The poem mixed Latin with new English, this was to highlight the divide within the exhibition toward very confrontational political art and a more reflective historical and psychological political art and analysis of where we sit within the political.

They say there is political
Arguably the mythical
Today's sins relived
Past
Histories escape the vacant
Today's knock, call, reluctant

The mast, the mask
Political growth
Rights and wrong are your decisions
We try to reach you
Our mission The media is little more
Sense and feel, don't gaze the raw

The message

The political involvement my work holds is inseparable from the aesthetic and environmental influence. The organic state of my work demonstrates just how the rigid ties between politics conflict, the structure and stance of our governing body does not allow for organic movement/progression. This was a talking point of the exhibition as we were discussing the visual, concept and political stance of my work. Many helpful opinions were unearthed and the dialogue style of presentation took over between tutors and members of the group. This is helpful due to the ability to observe two outside individuals interact with you work and the concepts behind such.

The banner, as pictured above was a piece of work produced by a fellow student. This banner marked a conceptual divide within the works. The banner, and preceding  works were of  a very modern graphic nature with bright colours, slogans and humour.
These works were a reaction to a very instantaneous type of political involvement with close ties in the youth. The artists within this section of the exhibition admitted to being minimally involved in aspects such as 'activism', this is what divided the two themes of politics. Although still relevant, both the works gave platform to a aggressive, throw away media type of art that I personally do not see as progressive. The works still stand strong as relevant and documentary of a generation.

My own section of the exhibition was well spaced across two walls with one piece displayed on the floor of the corridor.
This was done on purpose to encourage participation, for viewers to walk across the work. Four individuals did and the work remains. This was for the viewer to engage with the piece and regard themselves as part of it, much as we are all part of the history that the work is based upon.  The divide within the exhibition of my work allowed for older pieces to be set apart from more recent work. This was important s a journey is showed between the more thematic pieces and the very specific works with direct meaning.

Although much of the work is classic in the sense that it uses paint or canvas, the process of the work is vital. This became more prominent to me within the talk about the exhibition works. The piece above was intended to appear weathered and old, to show the historical relevance in a subtle way. I contrasted this with the use of colour and the graphic font. To improve and move forward with this concept, investigation of new methods of manipulating material would help. Group discussion regarding this was what helped me move toward this realisation.
