Research- Artist (Terrence Malick)

Terrence Malick
Film Maker
Visual Philospher

After the presentation took place of my exhibition, I was advised to look into this filmmaker. This was most likely due to the philosophical nature of the work, along with the overriding themes of metaphysical involvement. The poetic nature of the films deals with concepts of nature much as my own work does. The obsession with nature within the works was something of great interest to me and is likely the reason a parallel was noticed between my art and the film-work.

To The Wonder-  "Newborn. I open my eyes. I melt. Into the eternal night. A spark. You got me out of the darkness. You gathered me up from earth. You've brought me back to life."

The Tree Of Life-
Prefaced by a quote from the Book of Job – “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding” – The Tree of Life finds Malick yet again pondering the nature of existence.
This narrative seemingly idolises nature and allows its demands to be met at once. The power of the natural world is filtered through each scene and the nature of our own 'reality' diminishes. I too can see parallels with my own work and the films. The themes that overtake are the same and although often intended to be removed, always find a way to seep through the edges.

'A common theme, though, to all of Malick's films is one that he expresses in a purely visual manner, being the way he shows us the human form in nature, its finite insignificance contrasted against the overpowering mystery of the world'  http://nofilmschool.com/2016/01/why-terence-malick-cinemas-visual-philosopher
The films created are documentations as well as reflections of hard hitting events. The stance taken upon reflection however is modern and honest. Throughout these documentations and reflections, natures overriding hands reaches throughout and reminds the viewer of the fragility of the situation.
