Unit Reflections- Ba1b

Unit Ba1b overall Reflection
Ba1b

This unit has seen involvement with workshops, research and extensive reflections. This paired with other aspects of my creative practice has stretched me and educated me greatly on the work I aim to produce. Taking part in the paint, hybrid and print workshops (advanced print) allowed me to reflect on how little the process involves within my own work. Usually the conceptual base and support are what roots the work. Although I wont continue a specific focus on paint, print or hybrid, all will combine to portray the message I desire from my heavily concept and theme based work. Using this multi-media approach allows my work to form into the psychologically involved art I desire it to be. Research around this area has helped to develop this. The work produced within the workshops very often had an underlying message or concept. This was not always done deliberately however often it is difficult to divorce themes from my art as I struggle to produce work with no meaning. However, the workshops did allow myself to focus more of the materiality of the works and the way in which they are made (including what is done with them afterwards). Much of the work produced within workshops was recycled into new art with a more conceptual focus on the psychological or the natural. This allowed a development of process as the recycling itself goes hand on hand greatly with the very vital themes of my work. Much of the latter paintings and works (series 4) came from the recycled body of the paint workshop materials or other found objects. Not only did this allow me t keep costs down, it also meant that new products such as plastics were not being churned out to produce work that protests the destruction of our natural world. This resonated with me and allowed my work to become process based by default. It further became the vitality of my work and allowed me to consider the need to produce art sustainably. Throughout producing work as my own practice or in response to the workshops (both of which overlap greatly) I was researching, travelling and attending relevant events. All of which I see as vital if my work is to be s socially involved as intended. Below is a list of all the research that has taken place, this includes gallery visits, books read and other involvements of mine since the unit began. At the bottom of the list is ongoing work/research aspects. The list does not include individual articles or publication articles that I read or analysed. I compiled the list before writing my essay as a way to visualize all if the influences I have had over the unit (although physical influences cant be record such as meetings or conversations) the list allowed a first step to understanding how and why my work moved forward in certain directions.

Aspects of this compilation such as writing articles for the Norwich Radical really helped my research and writing skills. This was ultimately useful for completion of the essay to a certain standard however it allowed a more clear approach to reflections and organising information. Further to this, it connects me with individuals who have a similar drive to my own and can visualise a brighter future. The articles written by others, specifically within the arts section are also very helpful to my own research and involvement.
This unit's essay was focused upon historical works, I chose to write about the irony with this. Arts movements (including poetry) have been filled with foreboding for decades, yet work is still being produced today preaching the same issues. This was a drive for much of the series |||| works. The concept of the series |||| is a tally chart, one strike is left. The works celebrate our organic world and draw parallels with the human mind and out surrounding nature. It also encapsulates references from History regarding the downfalls of our leaders in acting quickly enough. The piece entitles 'Geneva Series ||||' looks onto the 1979 climate conference as  a painted over artifact. I found myself feeling frustrated throughout this topic as I educated myself further on the harsh reality that the human race faces. However, this drives the will to research a psychological involvement in the humans willful blindness. Throughout this topic I have been trying to find a psychology student to collaborate with, however, the area in which I am investigating is very specific and those who have replied dot my many emails and letters do not fit the area. I will continue to look and hopefully find research that can support my work separate to a individual producing such. Having this research would allow my work to be lifted from concept and land within the realms of social change.
Originally I considered my work to be socially engaged however this is not directly true. The concept is socially engaged and the work is sociologically engaged. This engagement aims to connect a deeper area with the work to drive for further research and interest by the viewer. This Independence from the work is what means the work is not directly 'socially engaged'. However, research around socially engaged work allows a further understanding of what is and is not within that bracket.

As I progress with my work through the summer and into the next year of my degree I hope to use many more psychological research pieces to backup my pieces. Therefore, the I can begin to analyse how individuals react to the works. This will allow me to progress into influencing the thoughts and feelings of the viewer.
