Welcome briefing to the course-running through the structure of the year and the aims of the year. The statement of intent will help clarify the practice for the year and the direction I aim to move forward in. The research that runs throughout the year will allow this direction to become more clear. Personally, experimentation is vital this year as my research is strong yet the physical aspect is lacking. I plan to engage in more craft based procedures such as clay work or layered print, these would act as a mental illustration to the political and social areas my writing engages with. Within the handbook and in the lecture, debate and collaboration was stressed. This was clear as the first group tutorial took place. 

Group tutorial- 
The group discussion started about our own practice and medium used/planned to use. Where we wish to progress with the work and how this will coincide with our research. This allowed clarification of our own concept yet caused some friction about the right to produce work that is self indulgent in a western privileged setting.  Although many retain the right to do that, I personally feel all aspect of modern life should be going toward a more progressive future in terms of social stability and sustainability. I began to question if my work falls under art or journalism. However, the group worked together to overcome mental barriers and reassure each other. I feel confident my work falls into the art category due to the modern difference in thinking that aims for change.  Collaboration between writing and visual can help reach out to those less likely to engage with the more far reaching modernity within art. I am slightly nervous when discussing my ideas as I do not wish to insult people, yet do want to raise awareness of the situation many find themselves in, and the luxury of such. 

To move forward from this tutorial I aim to look more into art theory and visual politics to more closely align my writing with my visual work. After looking at the reading list I aim to immerse myself in other aspects of art to more broadly view others work to help communicate.
