Kick-start Project (Concept, Research, Reflections and outcomes)

Kick-start project

25th-29th September

Concept and interpretation-
Although initially frustrated with the brief, I found myself warming to the idea of using others to discover how we may move forward. Although much of the exercise may be social, the roots could help myself investigate how my work is portrayed by others. Further to this, I can use those around me to build a psychological may of our social study space.
Visual-Psych Map of studio

Familarising ourselves with the studio space and those we find ourselves with. Our plans for this year are to be reflected upon as a group and we are to use each other to discover if our plans and ideas resonate as intended with others.

The four questions of the brief-
What might I (we) make here?
What am I? Who are they?
What might I do here?

I intend to answer these in full by the end of the project and be able to fully reflect on if this project has had the desired effect.

Initial Concept-
Diversity within the space could be proved and encouraged through a series of poems written line by line through each individual. Not knowing what the last has written each poem will be as diverse as the space and as diverse as the art world we all intend to enter. This begins to answer who are they and who am I. This forced combination locates us as individuals yet places us within a collective sphere. This falls in line with my research interests and gives chance to reflect on others.

Surrounding Research-

ASSEMBLE
http://assemblestudio.co.uk/?page_id=48
Assemble is a collective working together to reunite people with places and the architecture around them. Projects such as 'Make, don't make do' people living and working around Stratford High Street were given a hands-on role in the rapid physical, social and economic change going on in their immediate built environment. Although thematically different to my own work this is a project that aims to combine people within a community. Our study space is a small scale community and my aim is to also unify through our differences.
Other projects such as 'play summit' allow a gathering of like minded and influential people outside the regular setting. This not only inspires but shows the individuals the cause that the project is aiming for. Within my kick-start project I would ultimately like feedback about my concept and the view others hold regarding the issues around my written and visual work.

JUNEAU PROJECTS
http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/exhibition/art-now-juneau-projects
Juneau projects particularly interests me due to their desire to escape back to nature and the mixing of the modern with the traditional. I would personally be interested to use this concept within the group project. The very modern world we find ourselves in yet the analysis of the group project. The very modern world we find ourselves in yet the analysis of the conversations being had. The very primitive ability to communicate and the ever challenging modern topics are causing a difficult bridge to cross.

26th September- Kick-start project

For our project, each individual discussed their work with the group and we progressed to make an outcome for that individual. This worked well as it allowed us to remain as a team to talk about things as they happened. Further to this, the work produced was all a group effort and left us with a number of outcomes.

1st outcome/interpretation-
Wood based group sculpture
As a member of the studio space works with reclaimed wood for sculpture purposes, this was the first task. As he discussed his work he revealed the very abstract nature of the work. After this discussion he left the room and instructed us to use the hammer, nails and wood as we wished to produce a sculpture. We each took it in turns to add to the work and as each piece was added, the work was documented. The sculpture then grew to become an extension of each individual.

The interesting part of this work for me is what makes each person choose a certain angle or way to hammer the next piece of wood in. These differences ultimately define our chooses both creatively and socially. Combining them becomes sculptural evidence of our studio space and begins to answer 'Who are they?'.

2nd outcome/interpretation-
Modern Cave painting
The next group aspect we undertook was a personalised mark making upon the walls of our studios. The process was simple, we had our hand and foot painted in a bright colour, we then stood next to our space with the hand on the wall and our height was marked.

This, as shown in the above picture, gave a very personalised mark upon the wall and floor. This was a type of performance piece as we all interacted to make the end product. As I spoke to my colleague he discussed the idea of measuring the moment. Much like cave paintings, we are documenting who has been here. This is a very interesting concept that brought a type of tribe mentality to mind. Much as cave paintings did, this documents and answers the question 'who am I?' and allows people to know 'who are they?' upon entry. This very stripped back approach reduces us all to a hand, foot and height, nothing is to divide us such as social class, intelligence or financial situation.

3rd outcome/interpretation-
The 3rd project/artwork we produced was a sculptural inspired work using string. We were discussing the materials used by my studio colleague and she explained her interest with fabric and textiles. This inspired the use of string and coloured cotton. She left the room and we began to make our works. This time we were producing individual sculptures in response to her own work and ideas. She showed us a few artists that inspired her so ideas were already present to move forward.

These images were a couple of works produced, the first being my own and the latter another studio colleague. These works were inspired by disabling everyday objects, they achieved this concept well and ultimately render the objects useless.

4th outcome/interpretation- My own
Poetry
Group poetry and automated words
As mention in the 'initial concept' section above, my work in the group was poetry based and as a group we created outcomes. As a brief I explained how my work is mainly aided by words and how they are combined to strengthen the context of my work. We blindly created poetry that combines all of our interests and themes within the art world. By the end, 5 poems were created, mine is as follows;
Writing and words as a tool
I HATE RED
Environmental issues
soft
What am I doing here?

This fragmented poem begins to answer 'who are they' and 'what might we do here'. The answers emerge in the difference in not only the lines but the writing, pen chosen and speed of writing. This all identifies us. However, united in the poem, this metaphorically shows the need for a united front on many humanitarian issues. Over the course of the year, my work and research will be fully revealed to those around me, and like the poem, discussion and group work will empower progression and change.

5th outcome/interpretation-
Portraits
The final group piece was based on portraiture. The work produced by this colleague is done with finger prints, therefore this task was to paint one another in a similar manner.

We were given a 5 minute time limit to complete the task, this was difficult due to the inability to include detail. After completing this task we all appreciated the method used by our studio colleague.
