30th October- Group Practice tutorial
3oth october-
I explained my current projects and what influences them/what my research works toward. As my current tile project is very tactile and sculptural, discussing this was Desmond was of great use. He spoke of the mark making used and the differing options surrounding this as well as the different options for firing the tiles. Not using a kiln and using a more organic method of firing was an option that was thrown about. I would have to research if this is more or less harmful to the environment when paired with the firing pigments. This is definitely an area of interest to me as I am very aware that I am currently using a plastic based paint to finish the works. Although kept to a minimum this is still harmful during production.
Group Practice Tutorial
The group practice tutorial took place this afternoon and consisted of other student and two tutors (Desmond and Sarah) discussing my work with me. this took place within my studio space so I could show them my work and explain my practice as it stands. This is always useful as the verbal reflections allow you to explain your own work again thoroughly. When this is only dwelled on internally it is difficult to clearly see a path of progression.
Sarah found the relationship between my writing and the visual side of the work interesting and we discussed how I am trying to translate information into a visuality in a different manner than usual. We discussed the almost contradiction that I want people to understand these issues yet am relying on a very tactile object to do so. This is something I myself am still working on and would hope to add clarity to in the future. The concept of creative contact with information is something that I hope to elaborate on. However, the use of colour psychology is a small aspect of this that I made apparent.
This critique was very useful to discuss my ideas in more depth with different tutors and have a different outlook upon them.
Sarah suggested that I look at a book called 'Art is not equal to design' which will help me investigate the concept of craft and design and art's uses.
Another aspect of this crit was the discussion that I very often display my work on the floor. This is something I started doing last year and cannot reason why I so wish to do this. It is partly to degrade the work from the classical elevation but also to in some way block the viewer. The floor space would usually be accessible; however, if covered by the artwork then this has been removed. This forces the viewer to renegotiate their movements again. This aspect of my work would be interesting to look into and reflect upon.
We continued around one another's studios to discuss work a fellow student's research regarding Illusionary provenance was of great interest to me. Although very interesting within the work itself and the context used, I began to think of how this plays out in society and what this illusion could create. how far can this take something and who will be convinced?. I am currently working with this artist in a large group exhibtion yet more collaboration would be interesting in future.
