Group Critique- Kickstart Project 29th Sept
Kickstart project Group Critique
29th September 2017
Within this group critique I have looked at another groups work and analysed with them how they responded to the brief. There group consisted of two people so this already changes the group dynamic. This allows the project to become much more personal and allows the communication to flow. With our larger group I felt that people were less willing to enter into a large scale conversation with a time commitment attached to the project. The group I critiqued did not have these drawbacks.
The group had responded to the space in a very interesting way, they had first looked at the definition of the word space and created work around that. One Member had produced pressings of the surfaces around and in the space and another produced a film piece symbolising repetition of work produced in the space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpuqbmDgd9Q The film work also has readings of poems made as a result of the definitions found.
This repetition was dwelling on artists past and the many generations of people who have used those studio spaces. This investigates the traces and existence of people over time in the space, answering the question 'who are they?'. This was a very interesting response to me as it addresses the space historically and looked deeper into the meaning of the walls to others as well as those present now. Our group took the brief quite literally and treated it more a social aspect of the course as it was a short project in a group.
To present the work, the installation of pressings was hung in front of the film projection to combine both artists in unity with each other and in the chronology of their space.
Our presented work was less obvious to viewers as they were small tasks set by each artist, However, those who walked through our studio on monday would have seen the performance like happenings of the different artists tasks. This groups work was very intuitive to the space and could stand alone as a project, however, my own groups was very much based on others interacting with our practice.
