27th November-
Interim presentation and curation meetings
9:30-12:30- (presentation)
Today began the planning for the interim exhibitions. I was presenting my work in the morning to a group of curators. The presentation was short and informal in our studio. We discussed current projects and my practice. Therefore I explained major themes that appear and the concept I am trying to address. This also gave me opportunity to think of how my work may be exhibited. I mentioned the concept of a research file with the work that the viewer could interact with. This or possibly my poetry with an explanation delving into the tiles. When the curators contact me again to discuss work more specifically I would like to mention that on the opening night a type of spoken word performance would be great to display and showcase the words that hold up and underpin my visual aspects. This is due to the fact I presume they would like to display my visual work and not the writing. They also seemed very interested in my planned slab with writing pressed into it. this could be a way of combining the visual and the spoke.
1:30-4:30- (curation)
During the second half of the day I was on the curating team. After we had heard everyone's presentations we briefly discussed what the plan was. We came up with delegated teams of curators that would work with specific artists.
They are as follows;
Mary, Vik, Rosie (saskia, chani, sophie)
Laura, Sam, Kinga (Brandon, charlotte, georgia)
Louisa, Georgia 2, Sharon, Mia (Milly, Chloe, Meagan)
I will be working with georgia, charlotte, and brandon as artists. I have already some ideas of how we may curate their work to work as a installation and to bounce of one another's to enhance the 'scene'. I am excited to meet as a smaller group to discuss opportunities and possibilities for the exhibition.
We discussed our title; Disrupt, Distort, Disillusion
This came from that fact that all of the work we saw dealt with human reaction in some way. Much of the work was a distortion of reality and others dealt with the disillusionment of society. This overarching theme/title allows the artists to continue with their planned work and begin to decide how it will fit into one of those aspects.
Being on the curating team was very draining. Not only because we had to stand to be talked at for 3 hours but also working in a large group of people. This comes with a number of issues. One of which is organising people who in themselves are not very good at organising. I feel my frustration within this project will be working with people who do not have the same drive and commitment as my own. This does not simulate working in a curator's team in reality as a lot of the individuals on my course will not organise themselves and their time in the same way a professional curator would. This showed instantly as when we sat down a group to discuss, I was leading the conversation. I do not mind doing this however when people feel there is a leader they feel less personal responsibility for the situation. this is not what I want. I hope that working as a group does not prove to difficult and I also hope it helps me communicate to people the need for efficiency and time management.
