Essay proposal meeting and planning
Reflections-
Today we merged as a group to sit in a room and discuss our research based practice and what direction our essay was moving. These are always helpful as I get chance to talk to the research lecturer who is very knowledgeable and understands much of what I am trying to articulate. I have already Planned a lot of my essay and started a bibliography of my references ensuring I do harvard style referencing throughout as this is something I didn't manage well last year.
Above was the notes I prepared for the discussion plus a few notes around the edge. I have much to reflect on from this discussion. One aspect of this is the societal structure that causes aesthetics. My essay theme being 'ethics and aesthetics', there is an intrinsic link between modern ethics and those who produce the aesthetic items. The consumer capital that rules the buying demands of often aesthetically pleasing items is intrinsically unethical. I am beginning to wonder if this extends throughout the art world and how modern commission and beauty sits within this very classically conscious industry.
However, in saying that this is a conscious industry, I was very surprised at the lack of insight around the table. There was only one other student who spoke directly to me and tried to make suggestions or influence my thought process. These sessions are meant to be interactive yet it wasn't except for a few people. This is a shame as shared knowledge is such a powerful tool.
I took a lot from the session and am looking forward to writing my essay however there seems to be a general dread toward written work and the notion of essays/blocks of text. This is something I was considering within the talk. It has made me vastly reconsider about written work and the implications it has within a gallery space/more general social sphere.
