8th November- Print exhibition (reflection and documentation)
8th November-
Print Workshop exhibition
Print exhibitionToday we set up our exhibition in the library display cabinet. These are positioned in the main area of the library where many people go to do work or read. The cabinets contain two pieces of work (one print and one etching within a glass vessel).
This archaic style exhibition finds itself suspended above special edition books and other rare/limited edition material. Therefore this enters the work into a certain realm already drenched in connotation, a pre-prepared conceptualisation of what a archive means and what is within it. Much like the white gallery space This 'archive' places the work into a suspense of its own. We discussed our work afterward within a mini crit. This brought up a range of concepts including the modern and historic concept of archive and the media archives that are created within the modern world.
-The exhibition is a Museum archive style with modern connotations; from the work produced. Very conceptual, often reflecting on ideas and concepts from a modern point of view.
-The work becomes a preservation and documentation of not only the moment but the process, physically and conceptually.
-Archives often order things into category, meaning or time period. We were revisiting lack of classification- the exhibition doesn't have labels.

Research- Negotiating the archive and surrounding themes
I have read into the below references to try and begin to disclose how archive based work has been used within modern art. The historical groundings of much of the work allows it to speak for a wide range of time periods and people. Work such as this really makes you contemplate the concept of the relic and the legacy. Something I have been considering within a recent exhibition PINK. I have been wondering about the future and the past. A time capsule of information is being purposely made by many of the below artist. Therefore, this interaction with the archive becomes and archive of itself. The work hold together to stand in histories art archive. Even me searching for them now and looking in artist archives for their work takes the pieces out of context and views them differently than if originally seen in the original exhibition.

Below are prominent quotes that resonated with me in regard to the archive and the modern application of the archive.
'The archive is popularly conceived as a space where things are hidden in a state of stasis, imbued with secrecy, mystery and power.'
'There are perhaps connections to be made between this fascination with archives and a widespread sense that within Western capitalist societies we are surrounded by stuff but uncertain about what is significant.'
'Archives no longer belong to the lawmakers and the powerful; archivists see themselves as serving society rather than the state. The archive theorist Eric Ketalaar has described this view of the archive as, ‘By the People, of the People, for the People’The archive presented within the exhibition may be seen more as a group of things together. The fact however, that they are grouped may also remove them from this category.
