9th November- Collaborative Exhibition planning/reflections

9th November-
Exhibition planning
'Conversation as integral to materiality-The process of making '

(Initial planning with group)

Today I met with three 3rd year students to discuss a exhibition that we are planning. All of our work is socially and politically focused so we wanted to find common ground and discuss possibilities. We all like the concept of craft and especially group craft.

The discussion lead down a lot of craft based Ideas and therefore we spoke a lot of material, clay and the possibility to combine these together.

I suggested to concept of a large piece of material that we all worked into together over the coming weeks. The material would then show a combination of cultures, techniques and ideas. The multicultural group would then be equally represented upon the material.

We have continued discussion and I continued to suggest that possibility that we invite the viewer to add to the work as it is exhibited. Then there is a bringing together of cultures and crafts upon this tactile object. The group influence on the work means  that the work is not claimed solely by one artist ad given ownership but it has a lot of thoughts and conversations within its fibres.

Another member of the group has looked into the use of Calico as a cheap and natural material to work into as a group. The material can then be rolled up for storage and transported easily.

We will be meeting again in a week to discuss the plans we have made so far. It is challenging to collaborate with a group of people who I do not know very well. Further to this, as they are third year they are taking a less experimental point of view. This work to me is an integral process of investigation and learning from others completing differing work under the same politically driven themes.
