Research-
Touching and Imagining,(an introduction to tactile art)
Jan Svankmajer
'Our sight is being corrupted on an unimaginable scale.' page1. 1901 F.X.Salda
The above quote is very apt when describing modern society and the visuals that accompany that. The echo of objects that resonate with the viewer even if the object is no longer being viewed. These echos begin to overlap so the pollution of the sight is an ever growing tension.
'The history of human spirit as seen through psychoanalytical research shows that all human needs are comprised firstly of material and utilitarian needs and how the fulfilment of one leads to the fulfilment of the other'. Page3 (Karel Teige 'Poetry for the 5 sense or the second Manifesto of poetism' 1928)
This section of a piece of writing with extensive connotations and backgrounds is something I feel justifies part of my own practice. Although justification isn't the main thing I am searching for, my tactile work can often be filtered into a craft section of art and the need for these sensual awakenings is undermined.
'Where even clearly familiar objects assume the appearance of something unreal, when one has to rely on one's own ability of association and tactile memories which, however, can always mislead us' page 12
'Some elements of tactile objects stimulated identical or very similar associations in individual participants' (page 20)
Both the above quotes deal with the conception of object association and the parallels between individual objects and also the ability to identify these objects. Identification is something that western lives value and the ability to label things is interesting. This makes me think of my own practice and work that I have already labelled as tiles. The connotations of this and therefore the social implications this also brings before the object can speak for itself.
The discussion of object and the ability of object/opportunity within art from pages 20-25 is very interesting as it discusses how this could overtake the use of colour and shape purely. the use of senses such as touch allows a different psychological connection to the viewer.
'A multitude of materials opens a world of invisible barriers, tremendous shocks and after shocks fading into continual gestures.' (page 38)
(page 70)
