10th December- Figured Fabric Collaboration Plans

10th December-

Figured Fabric Collaboration Plans
This project stemmed from talks of a collaboration regarding origin and politics. The others that I began work with were already engaged in culturally specific work that also passed comment on the common injustices that the west impose/historically have imposed.

Therefore I began thinking of my own origin and the implications that accompany this. I was born into a military family in Germany, we then moved to Northern Ireland and eventually to england. This has therefore influence me greatly, we never stayed in one place longer than 3 years.  My origin was therefore not a place but within people. When those people were later gone from my life a nomadic shell has been left that means traveling and living in different locations is the most at home I can feel. I wanted this work to reflect this but mainly the implications that military life has. I have now learnt why we were in those different places and what our government has caused through the wars entered into and fought in by my Dad.
A feeling of pride is replaced by discomfort and a type of shame. Therefore, for this I have decided to embroider the countries I have lived in over fabric, sourced from the cultures and traditions that the military, my father, had such a influence upon while we lived there. This is a metaphorical embodiment of the sharp presence the west holds and the greatly vested interest the government has in so many wars.
