Personal tutorial
Today's Tutorial allowed me to show that I have been doing primary artist research by visiting galleries and reflecting on what art is displayed currently, what are is chosen by our institutions. We also discussed the logistics of my tile work and how they will be displayed/there place in presentation. They are primarily a visual aid and an object that can help cognitively open minds as people enter the gallery, they are endearing. However, I am interested in their ability to allow de-elevation, we discussed them being a type of performance piece and me recording how people interact with them as they block a space. However, we then discussed what will happen after they have been used within that work, they may have been broke or altered, there display then will allow questions to be raised as to what caused these breakages. The footage of the interaction could be displayed alongside the tiles as a visual aid . This experimentation aspect of my work is something I need to progress with. However, finding the opportunities to exhibit the work is difficult without there already being a brief or category that the work has to fit into.
Therefore I find myself at the same cross roads once more, how can my visual work be a useful aid to my written work and my research. I could possibly only use written work within my art yet I would then loose the entire concept of visuality to open up a new consciousness when the work is displayed. The visual aspect is not holding up the concept; explaining that is difficult. The application aspect of my work only seems to come through my written work and my curation of others. I have found myself offering guidance to other regarding the ethical guidelines they are working toward and within. This to me seems to be a more helpful position. We discussed this also in my tutorial. I am possibly therefore more useful as a thinker, writer and curator than someone who has a set visual practice. Mine fluctuates depending on my mental and written advances. This fluid practice means that it is difficult to feel fully settled about my own work and the social and environmental issues it is aiming to address.
I think to progress from here I need to continue with my written work yet possible translate these words into a more fluid manner. A visual typography of my words alongside sketches/concepts. This would help me map out the visual of my work once more. Also moving forward with any film work integrating the clay 'tiles' also.
We also discussed the logistics of putting my work on the walls or the floor. This is specifically tricky regarding my large scale terracotta work. The work has cracked and I like that aspect of it. Therefore it will need to be moved swiftly and carefully ensuring the words stay in line.
Overall, I am feeling slight discomfort at the moment concerning my visual works place, however, I feel this year I am better equipped in tackling this issue and resolving it. I need to move back to a more fluid concept of sketching and visually thinking, then hopefully the work will open itself to me. I am also going to start building an archive of texts and documents that could be displayed with the works. Therefore, the written aids that inspired them will be evident. Finally we spoke of my possible placement in the school and my primary research that will be taking place. These experiences and information will help add to my archive and clarify my works social situation.
