12th December- Lecture- Art and value
12th December-
Art and Value
The lecture today was very interesting. We usually convert very thematic aspects of art with a lot of critical theory seeping through. This aspect does also boast this but simultaneously we seemed to be facing the more realistic aspect of being an artist. When I say realistic, I mean the socially constructed reality that surrounds us. That construction is made partly by wealth and commodities.
The book I am currently reading; 'Cultural Capital' focuses on many themes we discussed and I could see parallels between it and books that we were recommended.
The quote by Bataille is the exact exception of the issues my work addresses within today's society. I am trying to engage with those who are in a a luxurious position, those who have the chance to make drastic changes. This elitist hierarchy is not fair and the art world is well and truly lodged as part of the beast. As those are the people that decide what visual commodities are worth looking at or investing in.
