Postcard exchange
Postcard exchange
Following on from last week's lecture on audience and this weeks regarding art and value. We took part in an exercise where we traded our work, our 'postcards'. I had made mine in reference to the history of postcards. The first was sent in 1840. The same year that Europe forcibly colonised the Maori region in new Zealand. Land was signed over to Queen Victoria, as her head was pride of place on the postage stamp. These curious forms of communication and social interaction lead me to to see the postcard more as a symbol of interaction than writing. This surprised me as my practice is so word based. This exercise allowed the group to discuss value and to decide who had what artwork. The earlier lecture investigated these themes and the market is unfortunately a place that inhabits all art.
