25th January-

Figured Fabric works
(Progress Documentation)

Title of works; From a Past Life

The above image is of the the progress that has taken place with my own pieces that will be entered into the upcoming figured fabric exhibition. Due to the fact I have been one of the the three organisers/curators of this exhibition means that I have neglected completing my own pieces and ensuring they are ready. I have spent much of Thursday in a meeting about the exhibition and also collecting works from others and documenting the number and name of each person. This has reduced the available time I have had to do my own embroidery. However, this has also meant I have found myself working on them at any available moment. They have slowly and surely become a labour of love. This seemingly goes well with the fact they are a craft intensive piece of work. The handmade element brings the works out of the mechanical and toward personal endearment. Many people I have spoken to have used the machine that the university has to embroider their works. This, more efficient, method suggests a number of problems such as the authorship of the work and the register between multiple and single. The 'ready made' springs to mind when considering the fact that many products are made using the same method. The fact these will then be placed in exhibition is reminiscent of already considered concepts concerning commodity and art  further/relevant reading-(Walter Benjamin, 'The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction' ).
The third and final piece I make for the exhibition will be an embroidered Northern Ireland, also making commentary about the internal struggles of the country and the external pressure exerted by our government. These issues and interactions are unextractable from myself and my own history. The works hanging simultaneously on show will reposition my history amongst those I now find myself in commune with, the life I lead now.
