Prototype Book reflections
At the beginning of this unit I was thinking about the feedback I had received from the last. The commentary that my physical, visual work did not tie in holistically with my research and conceptual commentary. Therefore I began to look into how I might change this and act as 'artist as researcher'. This is what lead me to the tactile clay work, this tactile work was a physical, unplanned reflection of the research and working I was producing. It embodied the psychological development I was undertaking and the way my understanding of the system I, as a western artist, am functioning underneath. This extends to the university also as well as greater society. Therefore these works lived through research. I wrote about the differing concepts of how these works could live and survive. The poetry written after the clay production being an integral part of this. The caly work and written form were proving difficult to connect and I have progressed through the unit producing other work around this project. Including wider investigation of how text and research can live and be accessible.
Now the unit is drawing to a close, and in reflection of activities I have undertaken such as placement and symposium's in creative activism. I decided that it was vital to test the holistic nature of my plans. Therefore I produced a prototype booklet of the poetry and images. This 1st draft prototype took a while to produce as I used programmes classically used by graphic designers. I spent time learning the process' however with hope to continue on this quest of text investigation. The booklet produced came out much darker than intended and there were certain lines that I was not aware printed with the booklet. These are all learning opportunities for myself. I intend this type of book to be distributed in creative and non-creative institutions as a type of tactile encouragement of free thought. Through creativity, so many other powerful things can be harnessed. Therefore the instruction section of the book acts as an integral part for the readers involvement and therefore the relational aesthetics of the work. I had visions of the book being much better quality with a lot more writing. I was considering for a while how much writing to include. I couldn't decide what would be more effective, the poetry alone, left with the curious magic that poetry swings behind it. Or to saturate the book with research, writing, reviews and essays that have produced the visual work. I came to the conclusion that my work is overtly intelligible already and that I need to realise the value of a simple visual with a non-propaganda word.
