Today saw the briefing and beginning of the cross course collaboration project. This project is being done with VFX and Game art/design. There is 10 people in our group. Many people have not been very positive about this collaboration however I feel it is in opportunity to share our skills as well as our thoughts and conceptualisation of work. The brief of 'Public information film' is very broad and the 'achievable pre 1950's' makes this even slimmer again. I feel this has been done to avoid any one course taking the lead and overpowering others within the group. When we first sat down in our meeting all of the fine art students were very forward in speaking and putting concepts across. Our VFX member explained some more practical aspects of the task and put himself forward to lead the 'team' of people who will be putting the work together in terms of practical filming. This instantly showed signs of mature cooperation which was really relieving as I was most worried about the internal politics of the group. Fine artists are classically quite different to the course we were collaborating with.
After brainstorming ideas we decided to go away and produce our own concept then re group on wednesday before subdividing to carry out the work.
As I have been doing my work and research I have been considering what I would like there to be a 'public service announcement' about. My own answer to that is that he meat industry has been shut down and we no longer murder and consume animals in such a way that is causing global warming as well as intense waste, poverty and suffering. This is a reality however that very few people accept and I know for a fact many of my collaboration partners are still brainwashed into thinking that system is okay. I have decided to suggest this idea but not make it my main one. Another issue I feel strongly about is consumerism and brand marketing, the issues that surround such. I have therefore developed this into the Tetris idea about all the blocks being different and fitting together regardless of gender. This could also apply to Oliver's suggested 'focus campaign' about the introduction of gender neutral toilets into the university. The public service announcement could broadly announce the introduction of gender neutral toilets in all schools/universities. This will be an idea that is further discussed in the meeting on wednesday. The film must show a hypothetical scenario, this to me offers a paradox, if we show something that isn't happening but should it will make individuals question, why aren't they doing more ot make it happen.
When I was researching and watching examples I found the simple ones were more effective with extended use of of simple, inductive persuasion. Therefore I feel the visuals should equally match this. The tetris visuals would do this perfectly and also give us the opportunity to use sculptural practice to make some shapes to use in stop motion possibly. The vibrance of colour has been proven to work well on peripheral persuasion which is the more likely aim of this type of campaign. To be made for the masses not the few.
I was also considering the implications of language within this film further, I feel the voiceover should not be the 'classic voice' that you may find on these adds. As much as I like the older style, they are exactly that, much older and periodisation is not to be overlooked. I think it is important to make the work modern which still meeting the brief. The present deserves to be mocked as much as the past does, if not more for the current public downfalls. I am looking forward to regrouping and discussing further with my group. Unfortunately this unit is short so the research will be minimal however sketchbook work will support our progression and visualisation of the project.
