1st February- Figured Fabric installation

1st February-

Figured Fabric installation

Today we installed the figured fabric exhibition in project space one. We started around 10am and soon realised that a hallway space could have possibly been better suited to the plans.  This was due to the fact we suspended the fabric along wire lines running parallel and across one another. There is limited 'exhibition' walls in ps1 so that is what stopped us being able to execute the installation as planned. However, as a group we stepped back and decided how this issue should be overcome. The solution was to make the works hang higher above doorways to utilise the space better.  the installation of the wire supports for the works is what took the time as well as photographing each work. We received around 110/160 (roughly) works back to display and more will be coming in by the day. This was an amazing response and I felt so pleased that the enthusiasm was shared by those entering their works. We discussed with many people the fact that collaborations rarely happen in larger groups and if many people do a show together the work can often be fragmented.  This uniform, inclusive, collaborative exhibition was in a way experimental. Testing the response rates of many people. We were pleasantly surprised, with staff and alumni getting involved as well as other courses. The installation took quite a while as some of the works proved challenging to work with. Some of the heavy works that needed extra reinforcement for example. There was also health and safety becoming involved (to be expected), asking us to take everything we had installed so far down as it was not quite high enough for the visually impaired. I am very lucky to not suffer with such a problem so felt very ignorant to not measure the height correctly, we gladly obliged and moved the works. The health and safety enforcers  do a vital job within the university however I do not appreciate the often patronising tone and lectures that accompany the information. This will always be an issue in a private institutional art space. Ultimately that is what this space embodies. I was considering this during installation of this exhibition. However, I felt a sense of relief when I contextualised the works all together in a type of commune. The fact that much of my research looks at internal ethics and the power structures within art was fitting as these works were all the same size and not claiming to be anything they were not, grandeur or elevated.  I also enjoyed the amount of people involved and collective mindset, this lack of individualism is what Is needed in grass-root work. Something my works suggests as a solution for many problems within the creative space. Therefore, although the job took longer than expected it helped me think the works through more and also working in a group has grown my patience. The showcase takes place on tuesday and hopefully all artists will come with friends to continue the inclusive theme of collective community.
