Remaining sound recording and Editing reflections
The day began fairly late as Oliver didn't turn up until late afternoon. This threw up a few difficulties as he is our director. We therefore, naturally, lacked direction. This was a challenge within the group as the work was his vision and concept. Also, the storyboard was in his sketchbook along with the supporting material. Although this is group work, we have worked most effectively by having a director, especially a director so passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. We moved forward anyway and finished recording sound for the film and began editing the footage as well as animating the gingerbread man with the various symbols and the mouth movement. Therefore there were plenty of jobs to go around, I organised the external voice to come and record the sound for the work. I also did documentation for the day in form of a time lapse, as I have for the other meetings also. These will eventually be edited together to form a longer time lapse of our experience and collaboration together. I have felt very passionate about this as I feel that our internal interactions have been such a massive part of this work and the hurdles we have overcome and the discussions we have had are as much of the work as the final film. The final film is a visualisation of this and our combined work however the conversations along the way are interesting also. That has been my job along with part director in Oliver's absences. Jodie was working on finding the style for the animation so taking on more of a research type role. Milly edited the film footage together of the 'visual cues' of gender, biology and expression as well as attraction. Layla was working with Jodie to overlay the animation. The rest of the group were refining the sound and working on the title screen and credits. Unfortunately we only have one VFX member, James who had to go to a lecture and seminar during the day. Therefore this meant the timescale of achieving things was not as quick as desired today. It is frustrating that his Course have to attend other things while they are committed to this group work, especially the fact we only have one person with his knowledge and understanding of how to edit the film. Kira was working on the sound for the film, investigating the different options for the introduction and outro of the work. She was looking at 1950's music to add an ironic twist to the work with influences from the past. The obvious style of a PSA goes well with this, the 'jingle' was used very often to lighten anything that was too serious or obviously a difficult subject. We are going for a similar themes as we consider the nature of the message. As family young art students we are of a very different audience and category compared to many others such as the older generation or those with low levels of education. I think the main aspect of the film to me is the intense positivity and non-discrimination. The fact the character is not registering this topic as 'wrong' just 'modern' and 'difficult' is good, as well as them not feeling the need to validate those people, just understand them. I am glad we have therefore chosen this topic townsfolk with, I like the concept that all our effort is going toward a cause that needs discussing in modern day. I personally would have chosen something more pressing in terms of human rights and life threatening suffering. This is just my personal opinion as to how we should use our elevated position in this degree. However, moving away from my concept and skill set has been a learning opportunity. We have been using 'graphic tablets' to draw directly onto the image to display differing symbols such as Hearts and the mouth. This illustration technique is a really easy was to animate an image and is still very personal and individual. The work of the artist therefore comes through fully and overlays the photography. This is a very endearing way to work and is reminiscent of children's drawings. This helps us to appeal to a wider audience and age range. Working without the director or storyboard has been the biggest challenge of today as we have had to change the concept to get on with things. This is something we can discuss as a group later on to evaluate the logistics of the project and the time frame. I have felt very lucky within this group as everyone has been very independent and willing to get things done effectively. I think this work, as many others are, is experimental and is intended to be simple. Hopefully this doesn't mean low quality when it comes to the final screening. I think we should have been slightly more clear throughout on Olivers visualisation so that this unforeseen absence didn't throw us out so badly. However, it is only Monday so we still have time in the week to complete and refine the film as well as the ideas that are incorporated. He will need to be here for the refinement or have to accept the choices we make, this is a shame however as he is the most knowledgeable concerning this subject and theme.
