15th March- 'Fluid Praxis' Exposition curation meeting documentation & reflections
15th March-
'Fluid Praxis'
Exposition curation meeting
Today after the lecture and group tutorial we had a meeting regarding the 'research exhibition'. This meeting was between myself and the two people who have so far been curating it. I had expected that between them would have had more plans or ideas for the exhibition however I am aware of how busy everyone is and therefore the fact they may have been waiting for this meeting to touch base with me who was a newly added curator. However, this worked in favour for me slightly due to the fact I had a very rounded and clear concept on what I have envisioned for the exhibition. I had previously developed and documented the concept of many books and research items brought together but being rendered useless. The artists would be the individuals to select the books for us to use, us as curators will also put material forward to be used. This concept to me is very important due to the fact the research exhibition should offer as many questions as it dos answers for people. Unlike many exhibitions, this isn't trying to show one refined theme but a way of working a vitality in that work. The usual setting of a table with many books to me is very dull and void. The books wouldn't be read and the language used is often very specific to certain fields anyway so the exhibition would be limited in audience scope. Running parallel to the collection of books would be the work on walls, some of which would be hidden by many books. This aims to show that without this information the visuality would not be produced. This concept for me works toward the artist as more than the producer of things to view and moves toward artist as thinker.
I will also be exhibiting within the show meaning that I can further my own practice with this opportunity. I can collaborate with others in curation and exhibition of research. Something I am so passionate about. There is a real interesting opportunity within this exhibition to consider information as a material and consider the prior and future implications of this.
In the meeting we decided a name (I suggested the name of the exhibition, it had been part of my plans and fits well with the proposed plans). We also decided to make an instagram account to showcase specific books and works along with links to each of the artists blogs and websites. I put out a message to the group chat explang to the artists what we needed them to do and for when. I will also be writing a short paragraph about the exhibition ready to add to the instagram and have in the exhibition itself. I will also be filling out a risk assessment now for the show. This will cover all possible works by artists that they proposed.
Harriet drafted a poster this evening which is below-
The meeting presented a few challenges due to the fact they had not asked for the artist name on the proposal forms meaning Harriet had to decipher whose was whose. This simple mistake did not cause to many issues just hindered time. Further to this, both curators are going on the amsterdam trip so will not be around next week to help with poster distribution, promotion, space planning, instagram management. I feel it would be to complicated for them to even try however I am slightly confused as to why they would have put themselves forward for this opportunity if they are not around nor did they have any concept and idea for the exhibition. I feel they may have taken the initial brief fairly literally when it spoke of 'presenting research'. I however do not want to do this is the classic sense.
Risk assessments completed by myself-
