Lecture/group tutorial notes and reflections
Today's lecture was something I had been waiting for throughout the last unit and into this one. I had previously looked at the lectures in this series and Research as Practice is something that interests me greatly. I thought that it is something I would have wanted earlier on the unit however until now I don't think I would have valued and understood it the same. Only now is my work truly growing and defining itself as Research and Research as praxis. This Research is how we experimental and also something not widely respected also. An I getting aspect of the lecture was the discussion of the 'scientific' field of research and the 'artistic' this resonated with me greatly as I have often felt my work is less respected as a result of the field that goes before me and I have studied within. This unfortunately means that a lot of the work I produce doesn't getting the same recognition or reception as other 'research' I feel this is possibly a reason I turned to academic writing. As a way of investigating the same themes but getting a type of recognition for that which is an integral part of art and investigates so many important themes and areas. I never wanted to move away from classic creativity and experimental means but I started leaning toward the writing and academic side to bring to light so many important issues that mattered a lot to me. Also, the overarching power structures recognise such more, unfortunately. Currently I am working more practically in terms of research as practice and practice as research. This is being done through various expositions and collaborations. (See separate reflections). This lecture today also gave me a number of books to investigate and use in my dissertation proposal. I have printed the available copies from the VLE to research and try to investigate my own practice through that of past and current artists

The group tutorial today was informative as we were fully briefed on the research proposal task that is to be completed this unit. We also got our essays back and I was happy to see that the comments on mine were mainly to do with formatting or referencing. This is something I am proud of as I do so much writing I would be very disappointed if this did not return as one of my stronger areas. One aspect of this tutorial that I have mainly be considering and reflecting on is this 'primary research' aspect and how much of this I would like to embark upon. Summer will be the opportune time for me to do primary research, be that on placement or with another artist or writer maybe. I will be looking into this in preparation for not only my dissertation but as a way of ensuring personal practice development.
