Meeting with Holly
Holly's sketches
This afternoon I met with Holly to discuss the film aspect of the exposition and therefore the collaboration that will be taking place to achieve this. We were talking through scenes and different options for the short silent film. So as part of this many aspects were considered, including things such as the length of the film as well as the colour scale or greyscale. Whenever I work with Holly I always seem to envision the works as black and white/greyscale. I think that in this case, with this film this may be due to the fact there is a lot of text involved. There is then, a preconceived concept of what the work will refer to. The greyscale to me will work better with the other pieces and also not try to draw attention away from the movement of the individual. The shots that Holly has planned suggest investigation into all the areas of the face and head that move as people speak. Therefore I think the use of grayscale and therefore shadow will emphasise this. Further to this, the close nature of the shots means that these areas can be really investigated and considered in terms of their role within language.
Holly showed me 'Identes' which were used by bbc 4 in a series of adverts. (linked below)

They show four different shots/films at once and each is a version of the other. They are played however so they seem to be one singular shot. This is the sort of style Holly is investigating for the film piece. So that the multiple angles allow the viewer to see the words forming visually from the person talking but also the smaller gestures and movements of the face and the lips/shapes made.
Holly also wanted to check that I haven't sent the Braille printing off yet as she had a few things to say about the text;
'Someone once said' WHO?
'Artwork, art, artwork' which is a typo GRAMMAR CHECK
2nd Draft of text
We are known as the conscious industry. Someone said that once... Prinz and Roth interviewing Hans Haacke I recall. Have we fallen ill? The commodification of culture, art, has dictated our creative institutions and systems. Justify themselves, justify yourself, to the government. Pressure is exerted upon artwork and art programmes to progress toward social, environmental and economic improvement. The immeasurable cultural depth is reduced to a monetary figure. Monetary figure. Enduring the elitist, colonial, western grasp that remains firmly around art. The world. Although this is unhealthy for cultural development of any country, it fails to stress the question of implemented responsibility. Artistically rich and beneficial pass times or programmes are expected to offer benefits to society as they do not return ‘physical’ (monetary) capital. The same is not expected from other industries under the government. This proves the devaluation of cultural development and enrichment through art. Although this forced expectation is negative, it does remind us of personal responsibility. That within creative spheres there should be a reduction of capital grasp and compromise to allow for extended ethical consideration. Within the social and environmental aims of the government, the art industry still stands liable for its place under the corporate systems of function. Therefore the non support of such to in turn reduce the oppression of the art industry on a government level. One aspect of this is the sustainability of art practices and industries they choose to support. Art offers a bridge between thought, question and action however if the initial practice evoking that questioning is unsustainable and unethical then the work becomes a mockery of itself.

Quote used in reference-
'The art worlds, part of what has been called the 'consciousness industry' participates in this 'negotiation'. What happens in the art world usually rubs off, not in a mechanical, easily traceable manner but rather at the level of 'atmospherics' I.e of the social and political climate.' (Page 52)
