Collaboration plans/ideas
Today we had our briefing for BA2b which outlines the LO's for this unit as well as discussing differing opportunities that may arise. It also stressed throughout the fact we should not stop making work as a result of doing shows with others or entering competitions, this should run parallel with our studio practice. Further to this, without that personal progression alongside the collaborative works we would not be sure if we wanted to continue collaborative practices or solo work.
I had a long to do list today and the majority of it was admin regarding the digitalisation of things such as my PPF (personal planning folder). This was an important part of my last submission as well as this one due to the fact I need to have a solidified idea of what I can do when I leave university. Unlike many students, I do not have a place to go when I finish my 3rd year of study. Therefore I will need to get a viable job to support me, I do not want this to be outside of the work I do within my degree. However, possibly a paid writing job or teaching job could work while I still produce artwork and apply for differing artist opportunities. This was something discussed as part of my feedback tutorial as I was talking to my tutor about my options. Although he can only reveal so much he did stress that my essay and written work was very strong. This therefore fill sme with confidence and I plan to apply/offer to do unpaid writing ork until a paid position arises. The tutorial was very positive on the whole, except for the fact that I need to make it more clear if I want something specific to be read. This is a completely understandable piece of feedback especially considering the amount of writing I do as part of my work. Further to this he also mentioned the fact my research should not stop me making work. This also is something I have struggled with for a long time. The balance between the two but also drawing the line between which is which and if one ends and another starts or if they are parallel and a praxis of one another. The watercolour pieces I was producing were therapeutic in dealing with and understanding this within myself and through a visual medium. Another aspect of my feedback tutorial that was very interesting was his attention specifically to my Figured fabric works. These for me are autobiographical in a reflective sense. I do not produce work of this nature often an will not either. I am aware that my clay work and poetry is of course autobiographical because I can not be removed from the works however, I will not make work about my life. I explained this and he stressed that what was also interesting was the concept, craft and technique, this is something more agreeable. I really enjoyed the process and materiality of the work and think that the craft can be endearing. Something that I have previously reflected upon. I think I need to re read his notes when our feedback is released and grasp fully what sparked his interest and how I may develop that. We also discussed the fact my vly tiles need to live and be 'tested'. To move forward with this I completed an application for the Savorr Social open call night. This event showcases work and I proposed my clay work be part of that evening with interactive clay work, poetry sound work overlayed and an open response microphone. It will be interesting to discuss logistics of this with the organisers if my idea is chosen, if not, feedback will also be vital. I exposed my collaboration concept to my tutor also, a collaboration that simultaneously continues my studio practice. A collaboration with the government, one in which they are not aware of. I previously re wrote a government document without permission. This is something I would like to continue but film myself annotating the work while I read it. This footage along with the finished annotated document would comprise the work. This would therefore be a nonconsensual collaboration. I am currently reading 'Co-Art:ARtists on creative collaboration' and the concept has been mentioned a few times. I am hoping to research more into the logistics of this to complete the artwork. Finally, today I read the material claire potter sent over to prep for her workshop next week. This comprised of two sections of two books. A reflection on writing and a conversational exchange. Both very different in style and content. Yer both investigating very vital aspects of Potter's practice. I am going to prepare some written works for the workshop discussing textualization and 'the activist'. Therefore, I can express the vitality of words and interaction within my works and the understanding that is also vital.
