6th March- Lecture reflections and notes

Lecture Reflections and Notes

Today's lecture was regarding something that my work has been working toward and integrating within for a long time now. Text and art//art and text, this relationship is something that is sustained through history and especially coming into the 20th century regarding the inseparable relationship between meaning and the work. The conceptualisation of works often comes with a small or sustained explanation of that work. This, within a gallery setting, is therefore an aid to the viewer to understand what the works themes and concepts are. This is an interesting relationship as it allows us to being to wonder what makes the artwork the art and the words something less. Are they are their implications not just as integral as the rest of the art. Although many would argue no, I believe that words, the spoken, written and heard are equally, if not, more important. This is something that was investigated in the lecture. The notion of text as practice and art is something my own work has been investigating and grappling with, this becomes more difficult as we have to produce a research file as well as our 'practice'. If these intertwine as much as mine do then the work becomes slightly muddled. However, that is more an issue when translating my work into a form that can be marked in a binary way. Another very important part of this lecture for me was the investigation of the visual as research and visuality of text. The text, often looked to for its meaning and word processed form, can often give so much more. The research based visuality of the visual is something my work investigates through various mediums. I think this is why I am so free to work across different mediums as I know that my research is what is binding them all together.

We looked also at BANK which is something I have researched prior, their editing of gallery documents and sending them back to the gallery is very similar to the work I did with the governments UK climate risk assessment document. This is a collaboration in a way but the gallery did not necessarily want it to take place. Similarly to the way the government doesn't know that this is what is happening to its document. The use of government words and the truth is also a very different relationship working that work and it's this that makes the 'art'. Comparison of texts and words is something I will be looking at when I attend the wysing workshop next Wednesday. I have been preparing for that through reading and note making. But mainly thinking, thinking deeply about my own practice and the overlap and intervention this has with my article writing also. This lecture therefore could not have come at a better time for me. I would like to attend the JIC tomorrow however I will be working unfortunately. I hope to go by myself to then understand the demands that getting involved with that artist call will entail.

Text, art and research are all completely integrated for me and can not be removed from one another, specifically in my practice. Therefore I think running with my non conceptual collaboration concept will be vital and interesting in terms of research and 'the written' as practice.
