Dialogues reflections
Today was dialogues 2018 and this year art and activism took centre stage. This is interesting for me as I would consider a lot of my work to be on an activist level. I had done prior research therefore into the specific area in focus and the individuals attending. I found that during the talks, Noel Douglas seemed to want to install inspiration within the audience. Something I think needs to take place considering rebellions thinking is very removed from our institution. An example of this would be the fact that posters are removed from walls when they are put up. Even posters from the student union. This thought was crossing my head as he spoke to the audience. His presentation was consistent with C4AA and penalisation I have looked into before and would love to be involved in if there was a European version. There are many uk and European based activist groups however. I think he is coming at the issue from a graphic sense and this to me is great to hear also due to the fact this passion for change can't just harbour in fine art but should exist across the board. Therefore him acting as activist is very much another part of his work and life not an artist statement. This is something that is vital as many people use activist narratives to give there work a certain sense or identity. An identity that can not be sustained if they do not genuinely want to be involved in something such as social change. DashNDem were also interesting as what they were doing was allowing cultural regrowth within a community and facilitating that. They worked gross root up and allowed younger people to be involved. I used to live in the area they were working with and the Grime video that was resultant would have been very beneficial in allowing those children a relevant cultural outlet. However, I feel that they had a much more set plan on what they wanted to be doing than Noel who was more generally fighting for what is right. Not that that is a bad thing though. Finally, Clare who is a self proclaimed 'accidental activist' is in a position that many people will likely find themselves soon. At the hands of gentrification and therefore inequality. Therefore I resonate with her as he work is a fight that is very personal. This would probably more likely resonate with the audience as hers seemed more to fit the mould of art project. It's just that that project helped save a block of flats also. I think one of the most interesting parts of dialogues was the symposiums afterward, In conversation with Desmond Brett. The conversations with Noel and Clare and the audience were so fertile and active. Similarly Dash N Dem's were when challenging the audience when they pose questions of an unhelpful nature. Questions that query that the banks aren't also using the model they are to function. Yet clearly missing the idea that that is the entire point. I was very active in these symposiums discussing the ideas and issues raised along with supporting the artists and trying to understand why some individuals do not understand activism and activist art. I personally ally feel that the label creative activism would be better due to the argument that one piece of work may not alter the thing it is making commentary on.
