'How text lives' Garment design//making
Thought//reflections//documentation
Today I began making the garment for Hannah to wear during the 'How text lives' exposition. My plan was to print the text onto the garment but recent work concerning banners and 'slogan' protest willed me to make it more free hand. Further to this, it is easier to cover a large space without repeating the text. I also wanted the words to be freely readable also. I think the rounded letters will be interesting to move as shapes when being worn. These shapes, mimicking the human body and the non uniform ways in which humans are formed/exist. Unlike printed or typed text that remains uniform and structured. The fact this piece will become a piece of clothing after photographic documentation is interesting when considering the lifespan of the work. This is similar to garments in general when you consider the life span and timeline of clothes.
Over the course of the production of this fabric I struggled with the space. If I was to use a smaller paintbrush for instance, the writing would not have been clear enough to read. This limited how much of the text I could fit onto the fabric. I don't like the fact that it is only part of the text on the fabric. It was possible to use a screen to print the words onto the fabric however I would need a number of different screens with different parts of the text. This is expensive but also uses harsh chemicals and processes that if possible I avoid. The production of this work further accentuates the collaborative manner of his exposition. I have written the text and made various aspects of it yet others will be wearing and living the words/experiences/interprettaion.

Another interesting aspect of this work is the hand painted quality of the words. This took a number of hours and the making of the garment will take a further number of hours. The time spent forming this work and bringing it to life therefore does not mimic the textile industry. This is not amass produced piece of clothing/fabric. The text reflection on the moving human body is yet another way to interpret and interact with the words.
