24th April- 'secondary Documentation' Collaboration

24th April- 'Secondary Documentation' Collaboration
With collective- Stray Dogs (internal student collective of three)

I was sent an email 'Project' by the collective stray dogs. This was proposing a collaborative documentation concept.

Document they sent me-

BA Fine Art NUA Project Brief Unit: BA2bStart and finish date: Week 26 – 27 (10th April – 17th April) Project title: DocumentationProject outline: ‘Secondary DocumentationThis workshop is an opportunity to push your understanding of creating a response to a secondary outcome concerning the established collaborative group 野良犬 (stray dogs)
It is intended that this session will encourage you to expand your thinking around what documentation can be through responding to a two-dimensional reference of a three-dimensional sculpture Tape Fob Purrs (fig 1,2,3).
The sculpture itself acts as an immortalisation of the space which has been directly impacted by the concerning collaboration (fig 4).
The challenge is to create documentation, however you see fit, that is entirely authored by the initial documentation (fig 1,2,3,4), however this does not need to be a direct response to the imagery, instead the photographs should act as a catalyst for further interpretation regarding your ethos.NB. You will be expected to have completed your sculpture before 12.30 Tuesday 17th April.

Approach-

My approach to this was to write a piece of text that would then become the image.  So the words would differ in tone to reveal the image below. This was done in illustrator, I outlined the image and deleted the internal section then ut the image behind it and sent it to the back. i had to edit the image slightly to make it visible as the tonely grey was two close together to see any differing tones initially. Therefore, this became the sculptural work, however I wanted to further conceptualise this by asking the collective to then interpret my work as a new wave of documentation. Not secondary but primary creative as they can document by any means. below is 'Figure 1' Whic is there task. I found the authorship in their work interesting and the evaluated nature, therefore I have asked them to complete a learning objective sheet.  There is a great juxtaposition here as the exposition I have asked them to document is critiquing institutional irony and capitalist fine art structures, which we are paying for in a degree. This therefore to me is interesting as the exposition transcends through another creative documentation and out the other side. Into a re-conceptualised concept. This transition taking place through a set of evaluative means set by an institution will make commentary on the digestion of information. As the exposition does.

Original Text-

Street dogs may be stray dogs, pets which have strayed from or are allowed freedom by their owners or may be feral animals that have never been owned. Street dogs may be stray purebreds, true mixed-breed dogs, or unbred landraces. A secondary document contrasts with a primary, which is an original source of the information being discussed; a primary source can be a person with direct knowledge of a situation, or a document created by such a person. Secondary is then a re-interpretation/non-direct investigation. Therefore, this is a grey image. They have made it a grey image however I don’t imagine there was ever much colour involved. They have asked me to document this. Secondary documentation. This issue is reflective of the practice of documentation in the art of the 1960s. Documentation is here understood as both the creation of documents and the techniques of their management, such as collection, archiving, arrangement, contextualization, or manipulation. How we might manipulate now. How they might manipulate now and what they will pull off. Wire, block, corner, Juxtaposed linear settings. Describe my image. Sculpt your thoughts. They asked for a sculpture. This is that sculpture of this image. Tape concrete. They have immortalisation of a space. This space is to be destroyed. Soon. To path the way for many ill-considered works. Immortalise they say. Considering their own space as worthy of immortalisation. Straying from what once was not theirs and what will now remain as theirs in the memories of those who have spent time there. Time in a creative collaboration. The same collaboration that fabricated this sculptural work. A tape, a sound, someone’s immortalisation. Wire connection, someone’s immortalisation. Concrete, statue, someone’s immortalisation. I will not consider your objectives. You will decode mine. Figure 1.

Please think carefully about how well you achieved the Learning Outcomes for this unit and write a short critical reflection for each in the box below. When writing this please consider what you feel you did particularly well and what you feel you would like to have improved upon. Please keep to a maximum of 50 words for each learning outcome.

Learning Outcomes for this unit:

LO7: Demonstrate an understanding of a wide range of applications for your work, including workplace contexts for your practice.

LO8: Propose and plan areas of research for further study, based on analysis of appropriate techniques and information that extend your knowledge.

LO9: Evaluate and employ appropriate communication and presentation techniques in relation to subject and audience.

LO10: Demonstrate your ability to work collaboratively in order to meet specified goals.
