'See it again, say it again: the artist as researcher'Janneke Wesseling

The first thing that strikes me about this fragment of the book given to us as part of our reading list is the language used. The use of 'his' 'himself' and 'him' are shocking to me. The text, written in 2011 is not set in an overtly patriarchal time. Although one might argue all time is still patriarchal. Non inclusive gendered language surprised me and disallowed a depth of connection as a result. I find myself heavily analysing writing for language as well as meaning. A curse I have found in critical text yet helpful in critical theory. However, the subject matter was very interesting and so relevant to what I am undertaking in my studio practice. I have been engaging in research, artwork and theory for a few years now and each year I find these texts add a great deal of depth to that. However it is rare that I find one that can summarise and theories that process itself. Discussing research as a Praxis is linking the practical with the theoretical however who is to say that both are not interchangeable. I am sceptical when the text discusses institutions of art and art research. The research that institutionally undertaken is not what I am interested in and am fully working against in reality. Conceptual art has so many feeding factors that understanding how they fit together is a practice in itself. A very interesting section was discussion of what language research is communicated through and by. Finding that language and the invention of that language is saturated with a singular sort of person and institution. The western paradigm does however slightly cover this as it has a truly elicited position. I think viewing that's ground me has driven me into the understanding of the internal compliance of this. Hegel's theology is relevant here in terms of the artistic apotheosis. Critical and historical awareness were not always around and therefore it is now our duty to install that research. The text also discusses cultural commodification and the pressure form the market. This for me is the number one things shaping the art world currently and leading differing roots of research. Research that the leads to market success or high class interest. Although not always on purpose. Many get lead into a style or practice that is a result of the In market action and interaction not a direct result of creativity or research. The text stresses self critique and this is something I have read in many critical texts. Therefore I did it rigorously in the last unit, to much in fat. However, as the text also discusses, art and knowledge have an indefinite and unknown link. Something my own practice investigates. This text discusses the literal and implied meaning of both reason and intellect, sections of knowledge. I wonder that art stands mor firmly in one camp than another. That as time has moved on, one is valued and one is deemed the weaker knowledge as it doesn't make profit. The reason. One sentence that I did resonate with me greatly was 'withdraw from the real world' I feel in my work this is vastly the case. This withdrawal fully removes me from the world around me and many interactions as well as behaviours. However I do not often see that in others, something I have struggled with. I think this text is a good introduction to frame work with references and concepts of great interest and help to me as there are very few books in this field. However I think that re designing the structure of this area of art will be key to seeing research as praxis and vital influence at that also. The never ending through process gets stopped sometimes and this text allowed it to run. Finding solution in the sensory domain is what my work strives for and the recognition of this in this text further allowed resignations and connection.
