Works environment reconsidered
Differing placement

Firstsite ‘each to their own’ piece continued, developed and progressed

Rename possibility-
Natural capital committee carpet
New name having some sort of direct reflection of what the piece is to, to help people make an initial link.

Reflections-
As a result of the work done at Firstsite and the conversations that were had I was considering what it means to have a domestic item and the placement of such. I was considering this when I did this continuation work. Firstly I thought about the indoor and outdoor setting for the work. If it is taken outside it is in a public domain very often. Even if on private land, being outside means that viewing of the work is more likely. Similarly, if the work is worn by someone, the public implications of that. With work such as this, the commentary and meaning of the work is so vital that it reaching as many people as possible is a benefit. Therefore if I am to achieve that the gallery setting isn’t always the most beneficial. I placed the work firs on the grass, immersed in a setting that starkly contrasts what the document is about. This was the aim of this, for the work to be surrounded by something that it is documenting, discussing. The natural capital of our planet in the document has suffered ownership and abuse as well as commodification. If it is then placed directly onto this then the document to me begins to be mocked and rendered slightly ironic. It is almost a reminder of what it is the writing is trying to protect.
