About The Exhibition-
An exhibition of social art, titled “Limbo”, at SEAS (Socially Engaged Art Salon) in Brighton’s BMECP centre, 4 May – 2 June 2019. Issued by SEAS, 12 February 2019. Limbo isn’t just the imaginary place or state of all holy souls after death, but a real space many of us have found ourselves in due to wars, Brexit, austerity, socio-economic insecurity, racism and xenophobia. Limbo space can also relate to our cultural, racial or national identities, as well as related to gender and sexuality. Limbo space is challenging but at times, as a space in-between, also liberating.
SEAS (Socially Engaged Art Salon) is seeking visual & performing artworks that depict Limbo conditions, situations and places. The SEAS advisory team will curate the exhibition. For the exhibition we seek works in any art media (painting, photography, sculpture, installation, new media art, sound art and performing arts).
The Limbo exhibition will take place 4 May – 2 June 2019 at SEAS (Socially Engaged Art Salon). The show will include series of workshops, film screenings and artist talks by the exhibiting artists. It is part of Artists Open House, which takes place during Brighton Festival in May.
SEAS (Socially Engaged Art Salon) was founded in 2016 and became a beacon for social and political art in Brighton and beyond, showing the works of emerging and mid career artists from the UK and abroad. SEAS is located in the BMECP Centre, near Brighton Train Station.
SEAS was founded in a small house the heart of Brighton – an 18th century building intended for servants of the Royal Pavilion. SEAS’ unique model of home-gallery fulfilled a need for a dedicated space for socially engaged art, and provided a homely and less regimented setting, that was welcoming for both artists and visitors.
Engagement with diverse audiences is the core of SEAS work, and exhibitions include artists’ talks, discussions and workshops open to the public and community groups.
About The Space-
SEAS (Socially Engaged Art Salon) is a space for exhibitions, events and workshops, and an artist’s residency that concentrates on socially and politically engaged practices and themes. Founded in 2016, SEAS has became a beacon for socially and politically engaged art in Brighton and the south-east England. It is part of the Social Art Network and has links to local and national art organisations that engage with issues of social justice, refugees and migration.
A successful programme of exhibitions and events drew in hundreds of visitors and participants, a new programme of community art workshops, and links to other community and arts organisations. This success led SEAS to the move to a much bigger space at the BMECP – (Black and Minority Ethnic Community Partnership) Centre, near Brighton train station and to a partnership with the Euro Mediterranean Resources Network.
SEAS operates about five exhibitions per year, usually during other festivals in Brighton such as Artists’ Open House / Brighton Festival, Brighton Photography Biennale & Photo Fringe, Black History Month, LGBTQ History month and Refugee Week. Some of the exhibitions are commissioned by charities (such as Brighton Pride, Platforma, Sanctuary on Sea), others are self initiated. SEAS is also exhibits the works of SEAS’s artists’ residency and is open to proposals from curators, artists and artists’ collectives.

Reflections-
Being part of an exhibition in this space is an amazing opportunity. Not only does it bring my work outside of Norwich but it also allows my work to be part of a space which champions many of the same ethical factors considered in my own work. The space is fairly small, however promotion is national and the show is part of Brighton festival. This could mean this piece becomes my most seen piece of work yet.
